Release Schedule

Next Deadline: Alpha 3 released Feb 4th

Currently folks are working on fulfilling their enhancements, and the next big deadline is docs drafts on Feb 28th.

The cherry-pick deadline for 1.17.3, 1.16,7, and 1.15.10 is Feb 7th (Friday) for a release on Feb 11th. The prior versions, 1.17.2, 1.16.6, 1.15.9, were released Jan 21st, mostly in order to fix build issues.

• client-go now requires callers to explictly pass context.Context arguments to Do(), Stream(), and Watch()
• --dry-run takes a parameter to let you try client-side vs. server-side dry runs
• Support pre-allocated huge pages as part of the huge pages KEP
• Allow rate limiting at lower log levels
• Blank out the client label for two metrics
• KubeScheduler config has been moved to v1alpha2, add DefaultBinder plugin, in prep for the refactored Scheduler config
• Skip spread scoring for pods where it doesn’t matter
• API aggregation works with network proxies
• Refactor kubeadm etcd cluster building
• Fix return values for kubectl diff, stopping bogus error messages
• Use CNI result instead of weird calculation for overlay network gateway
• Shared storage volumes are attached in parallel on multiple nodes
• Get feedback on taints blocking deployment
• Prevent a rolling upgrade from slamming etcd with LIST traffic
• Make shared informers treat relist differently from sync, improving reliability on bad networks
• Add healtz latency metrics
• Don’t bootstrap kubeadm nodes that are already set up

Deprecated

Some special deprecations this week:

• as of the 1.17.2 et al release, anago has been deprecated as a build tool, soon to be replaced by a native golang tool written by Kubernetes release-engineering
• CI builds of Deb and RPM packages are going away because nobody uses them anywhere
• Kubeadm is dropping kube-dns support, and removing the CoreDNS feature gate
• The CSI demo fiber-channel driver will be archived due to lack of maintainers; if you want to take this over and save the driver, contact SIG-Storage

Regular deprecations:

• Remove all the generators from kubectl run; now only creates pods
• --enable-cadvisor-endpoints is disabled by default

• golang/mock to v1.3.1
• cri-tools to v1.17.0 for 1.18 (don’t get me started)
• CNI to v0.8.5
